“Just give me a name”

I have a little story that should show you the tone that this ShoddyIT.com blog is going to take when it comes to analysing the cause and effect of “computer glitches”.

For a number of years I worked in an IT department that was responsible for the smooth running of quite a high profile bank. There were over 50 different applications connected together, and thousands and thousands of interconnected programs running every night processing data so that the bank could open the next morning.

My job for a while with that bank was simply waiting for something to break during the night time processing and fixing it as quickly as possible so that it wouldn’t delay opening the following morning. In the terms we read in the papers these days, my team and I were basically waiting for a “computer glitch” to happen.
